Northern Athletics and England Athletics Road Relay Championships 2012

Holmfirth Harriers compete in the Northern Athletics and England Athletics Road Relay Championships every year and, by giving plenty of notice, we're hoping to get more athletes/teams out at these events. The men's team is 12 stages; 6 long legs (approx 4.5 miles) and 6 short legs (approx 3 miles) and the ladies race is 6 stages of the short leg. In previous years we have had great success, with the ladies and men both finishing 6th in the Northerns. These events are a great day out and you can be guaranteed huge support from our club coaches and fellow athletes. As a Championship event the club pays for your entry fee so it's a free race! The races take place on a Saturday so you still get chance for a long run on Sunday, having done some valuable speed work on Saturday! If you so wish, there is plenty of time afterwards to add some miles into your schedule whilst supporting your team mates!

We are a club of over 700 members and last year approximately 75 of those competed in the Road Championship. It would be great to get some of these regulars competing for a club team in these regional and national Championship events and by way of recognition - if the accolade of being selected for the club team is not enough - we propose to award points towards the 2012 Road Championship for those who compete. Anyone putting their name down for these races (details below) will be awarded 10 points. Athletes who are selected for the team (there will hopefully be 'A' and 'B' teams) will be awarded 5 additional points (15 in total). If an athlete who has been selected for the team subsequently pulls out for any reason (genuine illness/injury or otherwise) will be deducted 20 points from the Championship. Those who volunteer and aren't selected will keep their 10 points. We've had some great individual successes on the road, so why not put all that training to good use and join us?

Northern Athletics 12 & 6 stage Road Relays, Liverpool, Saturday 31st March

England Athletics 12 & 6 stage Road Relays, Birmingham, Saturday 14th April

If we have sufficient interest we may organise a coach for the Birmingham event for a nominal charge per athlete/supporter.

For more information please contact Road Secretary, Dave Turnbull; Men's Captain, John Ewart or Ladies Captain, Helen Berry.
