YVAA Knavesmire Multi-terrain GP

Another Vets race report!

On Wednesday 5th August we had another excellent turnout at the YVAA Multi-terrain GP, hosted by Knavesmire, from the Knavesmire racecourse in York. This is probably the fastest paced of the races in the GP series being almost totally flat. While this makes it easier in some ways, because you are running flat out all the time, with no rests or opportunities to relax on downhill sections, those of us used to hillier races still find it hard work! Although we were missing several of the regular runners in this event we had several runners new to YVAA races, mainly from the Tigers running group, who were having a go for the first time. We also booked the minibus to go to the race and this made for a good social occasion as well. Hopefully some of these “new” runners will be willing to have another go next season and also encourage more runners to have a go at these enjoyable events.

Dave Watson made a welcome return to the GP’s and showed he had lost none of his speed. Without Gavin Mullholland, from Stainland, as competition, he easily won the race by almost 21/2 minutes in 31:05. With Mike Fanning missing, next in the men’s race came Chris Beadle 27th, M45, 37:48; Gary Graham 36th, M45, 38:41; Rob Kersey 55th, M60, 41:45; Matthew Rose 66th, M40, 43:01; Phil Senior 77th, 3rd M65, 45:00; Mark Owen 82nd, M35, 45:39 and Neil Midgley 104th, M65, 49:23;

In the women’s race Lesley Ewart had an excellent run, battling with Rob for most of the race, and only slipping back slightly in the last half mile to finish just 9 seconds behind, an excellent 4th lady, 1st F60 in 41:54; next came Debbie Hall, F35, still having problems with a too fast early pace and paying for it in the second half of the race, but still ran strongly to finish 11th, 44:11. She was followed by the very consistent Rosemary Baker 16th, 1st F55, 44:48; Annabelle Hill 29th, F40,47:43; Louise Walker 33rd, F35, 49:07; Tracey Newman 52nd, F35, 56:55; Caroline Thomas 55th, F40, 64:39 and Den Kersey having her first run of the year after lots of injury problems 57th, F60, 69:07. After the race Knavesmire put on an excellent spread of food for people to enjoy while chatting and waiting for the presentations. Well done to all that took part.

There is now just 1 race left in the series for 2015 at Cleckheaton on 8th November. Details will be found at www.yvaa.org and on the club notice board.
