Three Harriers made the trip over the Irish Sea to the Isle of Man for the weekend to take part in the fourth event in the English Championship series on 11th July.

The race started on the beach at Port Erin, in the south west of the island, following coastal paths and over various peaks to Niarbyl Bay and back, taking in almost 6000 feet of climb in its 15 ½ miles.  The start was very cruel, with a scramble up a very steep banking, but there was plenty of time to recover from the initial shock and settle into the race. Thankfully the rain held during the race and runners enjoyed dry, breezy and warm conditions.  By the time the evening prize giving took place on the beach, the rain had finally arrived, but it didn’t dampen the spirits of those enjoying the post-race entertainment!

Helen Berry seems to have benefited from an enforced rest with injury after her road marathon in April, having a great run to finish 3rd woman and 1st vet 40.  Andy Hauser, a former English Championship medal winner in the vet 50 category, surprised himself with an excellent 2nd vet 55.

1st Simon Bailey (Mercia) 2:09:54, 28th (1st lady) Victoria Wilkinson (Bingley) 2:29:59, 46th (3rd lady, 1st FV40) Helen Berry 2:40:06, 89th (2nd V55) Andy Hauser 2:55:56, 198th Jean Shotter 3:47:25
