Holmfirth Harriers host Holme Moss Fell Race

Category: Fell Published Date Hits: 2471

On Sunday 20th July Holmfirth Harriers hosted the 17 Mile Holme Moss Fell Race from Cartworth Moor Cricket Club. The race takes 9 months to organize and with over 50 helpers from the club needed as marshals and in other and support roles, plus Holme Valley Mountain Rescue Team on safety duty, it is always a worry as to how many entrants will arrive on the day. This year the race also clashed with an English Championship event in the Lakes but an excellent 107 arrived for this very tough race, on a hot and humid day.

By the 1st checkpoint at Holme Moss Andy Swift (Penistone), Joseph Crossfield (Calder Valley) + Seb Palmer (Rugby and Northampton) led the way by about 3 minutes over the following pack. At this early stage Jonny McLean led the way for Holmfirth in 4th followed by James Durrans 6th, Dan Shaw 9th and Chris Beadle 12th. At Crowden, (furthest point on the outward leg), Andy and Seb were still locked together with Joseph about 2 minutes behind and Tom Bush (Altringham and District) a further 2 minutes back. The leading Holmfirth quartet had now rearranged to Dan 10th, Jonny 11th, James 12th and Chris 14th but all within a few seconds of each other.

;The next stage of the race includes two tough climbs, first up Bareholme and then the climb of Laddow Rocks and with Joseph dropping out at Bareholme, Tom moved up to 3rd position and Stephen Walwyn (City of Norwich) moving from 16th at Crowden to 4th.

Richard Hook

In the women’s race Sally Fawcett (Dark Peak) was running consistently in the low 30’s and by Bareholme was about 5 minutes clear of the 2nd lady, Helen Buchan (Calder Valley) in 50th position. For Holmfirth Jonny had started to pull away in 8th with Chris now 10th and James and Dan 17th and 18th.

After Laddow the race has a gentle descent and then climb, now on stone flags, up to the highest point at Black Hill (now a green hill after all the reseeding!).Seb and Andy were still locked together with Tom some 4 minutes behind and Clive Fitzpatrick M40 (U/A) a further minute behind. This is where fatigue usually starts to be felt and runners often make gains or fall back according to their condition and fitness. Jonny and Chris moved forward to 6th and 9th respectively but with Jonny about 11/2 minutes ahead. Dan and James had also gained one place in 16th and 17th and still just 10 seconds apart.

From Black Hill the race returns to Holme Moss with some good fast running conditions and while Seb and Andy were still close together Andy was now struggling with the heat and the length of the race and lost 25 minutes over the next 3 miles to the final checkpoint about 1 ¼ miles from the finish where, having given his all, he had to retire being unable to continue. This left Seb some 7 minutes ahead of Tom which he maintained to the finish. By the finish the Holmfirth leading four had largely maintained their positions with Jonny 7th, Chris 9th, Dan 16th and James 19th.

Sally Fawcett continued to run strongly to finish 1st lady in 24th position and Helen Buchan moved through the field to finish 37th and 2nd lady, Jackie Scarf F50 (Calder Valley) was 55th overall.

Runners were rewarded with free refreshments after the race, organized by Den, while waiting for prize giving.

Thanks to all the land owners, tenants, marshals, helpers, Cartworth Moor Cricket Club, Holme Valley Mountain Rescue Team and sponsor Brooklands Nursery for making it a great day.
