British Champs Fell Races

British Fell Championship race: Dollar, Scotland

The long trip north of the border was a worthwhile one for Helen Berry of Holmfirth Harriers last weekend.  Ochil Hill runners hosted the third in the four-race British Championship series from Dollar, attracting leading athletes from England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland.HBerry Dollar

The race 9.3 mile route took in almost 3400 feet of climb, over the interestingly named grassy peaks of Saddle, White Wisp, Tarmangie and Andrew Gannel Hills and finally over King’s Seat Hill which gave rise to a fantastic the view of the town and Castle Campbell.

The conditions were warm, with the occasional and welcome shower and visibility was excellent, giving spectators the opportunity to see the long stream of a few hundred runners making their way up the long first ascent.

First to return were reining British Champions, Simon Bailey of Mercia in the men’s (1:11:27), and Victoria Wilkinson of Bingley in the ladies race (1:24:16).  Simon knocking 25 seconds of the record he held here, and Victoria just 15 seconds outside the ladies record. Helen Berry had a superb run to finish 4th lady and 1st V40 in 1:29:03.

After her outstanding performance, Helen now lies second equal in the British Vet 40 Championships, despite being a race behind all the other athletes currently ranked in the top 6.  Helen was 6th and 2nd Vet 40 at Ennerdale Horseshoe a few weeks ago but missed the first race in Northern Ireland in March.

The deciding race will be held on 30th August at Llanberis, North Wales.
