Junior Fell Championship update & current standings

It’s been a very busy summer so far, with 3 races in the last 2 months and all of them English Junior Championship events, varying from the mist & murk of the Turner Uphill races in the Duddon Valley to the glorious, cloudless skies of Kettlewell & the Wharfedale TTT. This means we are now 9 races into the 12 race series and 48 juniors have taken part so far, with 24 having completed at least 4 races – a great effort.

With the best 5 races over the series to count, the tables are currently showing the leaders as Callum Durrans (U12), Alice Shelbourne (GU12), Ollie Rees (U14), Sunnivah Waterman (GU14), Chris Law (U16), Genevieve Durrans (GU16) & George  Green (U18). However, with 3 races still to go, there’s time for some challenges to be mounted!

It has been great to see so many juniors representing the club, particularly at the English Championship events, where the races at Clougha Pike & Kettlewell rounded off a very successful series for Holmfirth. We finished 3rd overall in the Club table, which was a great effort in an increasingly competitive & popular Championship. Individually, we had further success with Sunni Waterman 3rd GU14 , Callum Durrans 5th U12, Erica Byram 4th GU16, Lucy Byram 5th GU16 & Chris Law 4th U16, with top 15 finishes for Annie Stone (GU14), Ollie Rees & Harry Shelbourne (U14), Seth Waterman & Lavell Pierre (U16) and George Green, Kai Sunman, Eddie Hinchliffe & Joe Law (U18).

Next up is the Arncliffe Gala in the Yorkshire Dales on Saturday 9th August, followed by the Padfield Plum Fair Scamper on Saturday 14th September – both new venues for the Championship, so hope to see plenty of you there.

Phil Hobbs (30th July)

The Championship is split by age category, U10, U12, U14, U16 & U18, with a separate competition for boys & girls. Points are awarded based on placings in each race, with the first Harrier home gaining a maximum 15 points, followed by 13, 12, 11 & so on for each subsequent finisher. The Championship has 12 races to choose from and will be awarded using the best 5 results for each junior athlete.
