Helen finishes season strongly in British Fell Champs

HelenHelen Berry had a very pleasing end to the fell season recently with a fourth place at the Edale Skyline race in Derbyshire, the final in the English Championship series.  The race so-called because it covers a circular 21 mile route high above the Edale Valley, climbs over 4500 feet taking the summits of Ringing Roger, Win Hill, Lose Hill and Mam Tor.  The conditions couldn’t have been better, with clear sunny skies and a cool breeze on the tops; a stark contrast to the original date back in March when the race had to be postponed due to deep snow drifts,  below freezing temperatures, 60 mph gusts on top and with roads to the valley impassable.   With the final standings at stake it was a fast start, but Helen ran a well paced race leaving plenty left for the tougher second half and was delighted to finish fourth in 3 hours 26 minutes behind the 3 final Championship medal winners of Victoria Wilkinson (Bingley), Helen Fines (Calder Valley) and Judith Jepson (Dark Peak).  The race also doubled as a Holmfirth Harriers Fell Championship counter, but perhaps due to the date change, injuries and other commitments, Helen was the sole representative from the club.

This together with solid performances at Fairfield Horseshoe (5th), Buckden Pike (6th) and Turner Landscape (6th) gave Helen a final standing in the English Championship of 5th place.

The British Championship had concluded a fortnight earlier at the Peris Horseshoe race from Llanberis in North Wales.  Recognised as one of the toughest races in the fell calendar, the 17.5 mile route takes in a massive 8500 feet of climbing, including Snowdon summit.  Finishing 9th at Peris, along with 9th at Silent Valley (Northern Ireland) and 5th at Yetholm (Scottish borders), Helen ended up 7th in this year’s British Championships.

The Championship season officially ends with the British Fell Relay Championships hosted by Eryri Harriers from Llanberis on 20th October, in which Holmfirth Harriers will be fielding three teams.
