Junior Fell Championship update & current standings
Category: Fell Published Date Hits: 447
Following last weekend's Sedbergh Uphill races, we are now over three-quarters of the way through the 10 races in this year's Championship. The numbers taking part have been affected somewhat by the congested fixture lists (as well as the great British weather) over recent months, but we have still had over 25 juniors racing during the year. The English Junior championships have just finished and we had a number of top 15 placings, with special mentions for Erica Byram, 2nd GU14 and Lewis Byram, 3rd U16 over the 6 race series. We also had a number of top 3 placings in the individual races, with Callum Durrans, Sunni Waterman, Erica & Lucy Byram, Seth Waterman & Lewis Byram all taking home prizes.
With only 2 races left to go, some categories are wide open, whilst others are virtually over bar the shouting! The U10 Boys will be a final sprint between George Hobbs & Callum Durrans who are within 6 points of each other, whilst for the girls, it's the battle of the Yates sisters, with Ruby currently pipping Millie! Moving up to the U12 Boys, Harry Hobbs, Ollie Rees & Nicky Farquhar are all still involved & with the best 5 races to count, the table will no doubt change again. For the U12 Girls, Sunni Waterman is currently leading, but there is still time for Lucy Whitworth & Fiona Hodgson to stake a claim.
The U14 Boys title will be between Andrew Farquhar & Daniel Whitworth, whereas the U14 Girls crown is the closest contest of the whole championship. 4 girls are all involved, with only 10 points separating Lucy Byram, Erica Byram, Daisy Mae Smith & Genevieve Durrans – all to play for here! Eddie Hinchliffe and Lewis Byram are having their own little competition in the U16 Boys, but nothing has been decided yet with the final 2 races still to take place. Finally, in his first year at this level, Robert Hinchliffe has sown up the U18 Boys' championship – well done to him.
The final 2 races are the Yorkshire Championships at the Hellifield Gala on Saturday 4th August, where we will be hoping to repeat last year's success & the Burnsall Classic races on Saturday 25th August, where some of the top fell runners in the country will be contesting the historic senior race. See you there!
