Senior fell championships

With the completion of the Wadsworth Jubilee race over the bank holiday weekend, we are now almost halfway through the 15 races in this year's Championship. So far, we have had over 50 Harriers taking part in at least one race, including several newcomers to the fells, which is great to see. However, at this stage, the only meaningful table is the 'All to Count' where pride of place goes to ever-present Dave Knight – he has completed all 7 races so far, in varying degrees of comfort and is holding off the challenge of Jim Durrans & Phil Hobbs!

The main Championship itself will start to get really interesting once competitors are able to choose their best results from the different Short, Medium & Long races, particularly as there are still 3 Long races yet to take place. On current standings, it's Dave & Helen Berry leading, but only because they've completed the most races – still plenty of time to mount a challenge!

The next 2 races coming up highlight the different challenges involved in fell running. First up is the Great Lakes race on Saturday 16th June – this year chosen as an English Championship race, involving 7000 feet of ascent up both Scafell & Scafell Pike, plus a few others thrown in for good measure! Although it's only 13 miles, times taken are similar to those of the 24 mile long 3 Peaks, which give an idea of its severity. This is followed on 1st July by a short, sharp 5 mile sprint around Hawkswick in the Yorkshire Dales – hopefully, everyone's legs will have recovered by then!
