Christmas Cross Country 2013

AoifeKerry 2013The 2013 Xmas Cross Country Handicaps took place on the 21st of January on the field s of Brooklands Nursery, Scholes by kind permission of the owner Carl Brook.

The weather was almost summer like compared with previous years although as normal the under 11’s suffered the worst weather as a squally shower blew through during their race.

The under 11 girls saw a new winner with Isabel Richardson running a storming race setting off at a fast pace and defying the onlookers who thought she would never keep it up to come home a clear winner from Amelia Stewart who had moved through the field to take second and Leila Horn who had been last to start in the open handicap but finished a c lose up third. Isabel also recorded the fastest time.

The under 11 boy’s winner was George Marsden who managed to hold off the fast finishing Archie Hall who was the last to set off and recorded the fastest time. Cameron Roberts had been the first to set off and although he recorded the slowest race time in third place he had ran and smiled all the way round.

In the under 13 girls Sophie Allan ran a very strong race to win and record the fastest time, slightly quicker than Libby Shepherd who set off after Sophie and chased her all the way to come in second with Millie Yates not far behind in third.

The under 13 boys had set off at the same time as the girls and it was the last three to leave the start line who moved through the field on the final hills to dispute the medal places.

Sam Bedingfield ended up the victor on the day with a fine run to just stay in front of Finn Kerry who had to keep going all the way to the line to hold off Ollie Rees who was closing with every stride. Ollie had recorded the fastest time of the race.

The under 17 girls saw the battle of the Byram twins Erica and Lucy for the victors spoils. Erica had been last off the start line 10 seconds after Lucy and try as she might she could not catch up with her sister who had moved into the lead on the final hill. Lucy crossed the line just 3 seconds ahead of Erica who recorded the fastest time.  Lucy Farquhar  had just caught Amy Kettlewell when the Byram twins swept past but both girls ran on strongly to finish close up in 3rd and 4th.

The longest race of the day was the under 17 boys which is not easy with 9 stiff uphill climbs incorporated in the course, although there are also 9 downhill sections to compensate.

The stiff course was obviously to the liking of the hares as the first two to set off Shea Kerry and Andrew Farquhar stayed out ahead all the way through although with very much diminished margins by the end.

Shea maintained his margin on Andrew all the way through with his long legs helping him keep his speed up downhill.

With the rest of the field closing in fast all the runners were in the final field together with Eddie Hinchliffe having reduced the gap on the leaders by well over a minute to take third.

Lewis Byram showed what a fine prospect he is in many disciplines with a good run to record the fastest time.

Congratulations to all the runners who took part and produced some great racing and a big thanks to the helpers and marshals who made the races run smoothly.

Finally a big thanks to Carl Brook and Brooklands nursery for the use of the fields which produces a fair but challenging course.
