Junior Success at the Yorkshire Road Relays

Junior athletes from around the county converged last Saturday 31st August on Don Valley Stadium in Sheffield for the 2013 edition of the Yorkshire Road races and relays. This event the final ever to be hosted by the stadium, as it closed for redevelopment the following day provided exciting races in all the age groups, and some great results for Holmfirth’s athletes.

Yorkshire road relays U13  boys teamThe first race of the day was U13 road race for both boys and girls. First home for the club were Ollie Rees in 4th 11:26, Nicky Farquhar 6th 11:28  and Jimmy Burke 10th in 11:48 results that secured gold team medals for the boys.   Next home was birthday boy Daniel Howatson in 20th place 13:01,  Samuel Bedingfield 24th 13.01 and Tom Haley-Porteous 29th 13:41 with the B team finishing in a very creditable 6th place. Sophie Allan was a lone representative for the club in the girl’s event. Sophie had a a strong run and finished 13th in 13:19.

Also coming away with a gold medal was Olivia Sykes in the U15 race after finishing first girl in 11:20, Olivia was joined by team mates Daisy Smith and Amy Kettlewell who finished in 28th and 29th places respectively the girls team finished 7th. In the U15 boys Lewis Bartholomew had a strong run in 10th place in 11:16 and Andrew Farquhar was 26th in 12:14.

The U17s races were relays events. Holmfirth fielded 2 well matched teams who battled hard in a very close race to finish in 7th and 8th places. Lavell Pierre lead off for the former completing his lap in 10:59, handing on to Alex Robinson 11:12, with George Green last man 11:03. Eddie Hinchliffe was first off for the later returning in 11:16, handing on to Aaron Kettlewell 11:01 with Chris Law on last leg in 11:37. The girls race included 2 Holmfirth athletes. Lucy Farquhar running on first leg with a time of 12:36 and Sophie Spencer on second leg in 12:47.

Junior athletes from Holmfirth will next be in action on 21st September in the Northern Road Relays to be held at Stanley Park in Blackpool.
