Juniors Battle the Elements in English Schools Fell Running Championships

news-english-schools-2012Think back to what you were doing last Sunday. Most of you probably took one look out the window at the lashing rain and decided today was the day to tidy the sock drawer. Give some thought then to a hardy bunch of Juniors athletes from Holmfirth Harriers who headed to the Lakes to compete for their schools in the English Schools Fell Running Championships. The event now in its 5th year of running attracted 500 entrants from schools across the country. Cockermouth School in the Northern Lakes hosted the event for the second year, situated as it is on the edge of the fell it was a great venue for the championships races. Taking in to account the young athletes safety given the severity of the weather conditions the organisers decided to reduce the distance of the races in the older years 10/11 and 12/13 races and the maximum races distance was restricted to 3miles the races distance of the year8/9 race a good decision as the conditions worsened as the day wore on.

Nicky Farquhar representing Holmfirth High School and Ollie Rees running for Queen Elizabeth's Grammar Wakefield were in the first race for year 7 boys and girls. Both boys ran superbly seeming to relish the extreme conditions, Nicky winning the race and Ollie coming home in third.

news-english-schools-2012-2Lucy and Erica Byram and Daisy Smith running for Colne Valley High and Andrew Farquhar representing Holmfirth High School took part in the second race of the day. Their race 3miles in gale force winds and lashing rain was a challenge for the spectators to withstand the juniors coped admirably with the girls scooping the team award for their school, Lucy finishing 4th girl and Erica 7th well inside the top ten. Andrew also ran well to finish 16 boy.

After representing England the previous weekend on the fells Lewis Byram came into the years 10/11 race as hot favourite and did not disappoint finishing with a commanding lead over his nearest rival on the shortened 3mile course. Also running well and like Lewis running for Colne Valley High Eddie Hinchcliffe had a strong run finishing in 11th place just 2 seconds off 7th place Eddie

coming off worst in a sprint for the line. Lucy Farquhar making a rare outing on the fells surprised everyone and herself by finishing well up the field in 4th and seemed to have actually enjoyed the experience.

Running in Greenhead college vest Robert Hinchcliffe was a sole representative for the club and the college in the oldest age category. Relieved to be running over the shortened 3mile course rather than the 5miles that was intended for that age group Robert ran strongly to finish in 27th position .
