Success for Holmfirth’s Juniors at North of England Road Champs

U15s-Silver-Medal-WinnersSuccess for Holmfirth’s Juniors at North of England Road Champs with silver Lining for U15 girls.

In their first race of the winter season junior athletes from Holmfirth Harriers excelled against rival teams from across the North of England. For the first time in its   history  the club was represented by teams in all 6 of the age group races in the North of England Road Relay Championships on Saturday at Leigh Sports Village in Lancashire. The event held in beautiful sunshine was very well attended with teams travelling from across the North.

Holmfirth’s U15 Girls team of Olivia Sykes, Lucy Byram and Erica Byram, holders of team Silver medals from Last year’s championships in the U13 age group were top performers for the club. With another year in the U15 age group still to come, the girls stormed round the 3km course, Olivia returned back to the running track in first position on leg one in a time of 10.46 which was good enough for 2nd fastest time on the day. Lucy took up the running and was passed by just one athlete she handed on to sister Erica in second who also had a brilliant run holding off a challenge from Blackburn Harriers and bringing the  team back in 2nd place behind winners Warrington AC.

In the youngest age group U13 two very young teams acquitted themselves very well against strong opposition with the boys  team of Nicky Farquhar, Ollie Rees and Jimmy Burke finishing inside the top ten in 9th and the girls Sophie Allan, Amy Kettlewell and Libby Shepherd up the field in 15th. Jimmy also ran the 9th fastest time of 11.02.

The U15 boys were represented by 2 strong teams which finished 11th and 23rd. Aaron Kettlewell, Andrew Farquhar, and Seth Waterman in the former and George Green Isaac Shepherd and Lewis Bartholomew in the later. Daisy Hinchcliffe also ran well in the U15 race as an individual completing the course in 13.19.

Ruby Sykes, Sophie Spencer and Harmonie Waterman, completed the U17 women’s team with a really strong performance from the girls in 14th position. Peter Franklin, Eddie Hinchcliffe and Jonty Winn also competed strongly, finishing 21st in a large field. Lucy Farquhar and Robert Hinchcliffe running as individuals also both ran well Lucy in a time of 12.50 and Robert in 12.05.
