Soreen Stanbury Splash & Rat Runs (22nd January 2012)

As the car was being buffeted from side to side on the Elland bypass, thoughts turned to what it would be like on Penistone Hill, not known as a venue of peace and tranquility! Sure enough, we weren't disappointed and the Holmfirth juniors who turned out for their first Junior Fell Championship race of 2012 deserved every bar of chocolate and Soreen Malt Loaf that was thrown at them, as hardened veterans declared the wind as strong as they'd known it on Haworth Moor!

Holmfirth fielded 18 juniors, with representatives in every race from the U8's to the U16's and once again, we had a number of top 3 finishers. With many runners moving up an age-group this time, Soljai Waterman was our only representative in the U8's race, but still managed an excellent PB of 4.20.

The U10's, U12's, U14's & U16's all set off together, which meant a bunch sprint to avoid the huge puddles & be first out of the quarry. Once the field of 112 runners had spread out on the top of the moor, there were plenty of Holmfirth vests to be seen. Callum Durrans continues to improve and ran very well to finish in 7.58, 11th overall & 1st U10, with George Hobbs 35th overall & 5th U10 & Lewis Hodgson, in his first race as an U10, 81st overall in 11.09. For the girls, Millie Yates finished strongly in 61st place, 3rd GU10, with her younger sister Ruby and Elphina Waterman not far behind.

The U12's was a tough category this time around & Oliver Rees ran well, finishing in 13th place overall in 8.02, but this only gave him 8th U12! Harry Hobbs managed a PB of 10.06 to finish 59th overall, just behind Lucy Whitworth, 54th overall & 6th GU12 in 9.40 and just ahead of Fiona Hodgson, 70th overall in 10.46.

The first 2 girls home in the race were both from Holmfirth - Lucy Byram was 1st GU14 & 7th overall in 7.34, edging out sister Erica, who was just behind in 7.50, 9th overall & 2nd GU14. Daisy Mae Smith also ran well to finish 30th overall in 8.42, with Genevieve Durrans close behind, 36th overall in 8.52. Daniel Whitworth was our sole U14 boy & battled round in 8.54, finishing 37th overall.

The U16's run 2 laps of the same course & in their first outings over the longer distance, our 2 runners excelled, with Eddie Hinchliffe 1st overall in 13.09 and Sophie Spencer 2nd overall & 1st GU16 in 16.11 –great performances in the conditions!

The next race on the junior calendar is Ilkley Moor on Sunday 26th February - let's hope the wind has eased off a little by then!
