Snowdon International Mountain Race, Sat 20th July

Snowdon International Mountain Race, Saturday 20th July

FRP 3396-Helen SnowdonHolmfirth Harriers ladies Captain, Helen Berry, recently gained her first senior England vest, twenty-one years after representing England as a junior on the fells. Helen was selected from her performance in the Fairfield Horseshoe race in May, the first in this year’s English Championship series, to run in the International Snowdon Race on 20th July.

The race, to the top of Wales’ highest mountain and back, is a classic and now in its 38th year, attracting over 600 competitors.  The ten mile route follows the tourist path from Llanberis, alongside the mountain railway in parts, to the summit, taking in 3,300 feet of climb before returning on the same route to the town.

With temperatures reported to be almost 30 degrees centigrade on the mid-part of this famous mountain, the runners were tested to the maximum for not only their ability to handle the heat, but also the unrelentingly-tough underfoot conditions of Snowdon.

Helen certainly found it testing, but was pleased to be back in one piece and complete the England team in 10thplace (1:34). Her teammates, 2011 Snowdon winner Pippa Maddams of Keswick AC and Mel Price of Mercia returned in 5th and 8th respectively to give England third place behind Scotland and Ireland.  Ireland had their first winner in Sarah Mulligan (1:26).

The men’s race was won by Salford Harriers Andi Jones, taking his sixth win.  The England men, led by Yorkshire man Rob Hope in third, won the team.
