Northern Athletics Cross Country Relays – Saturday 6th October, Graves Park, Sheffield

northern-xc-relays-2012The cross country season got off to a good start for Holmfirth Harriers' athletes on Saturday with the Northern Athletics cross country relays at Graves Park in Sheffield. The event incorporated the Yorkshire Vets Championships which meant just one 'open' team was contesting the Northern Athletics event, run over an undulating 2 mile course. All rounder and GB mountain running international, Katie Walshaw, led from the gun on leg 1. As the race settled down, Durham City's Rosie Smith took the lead, but Katie used her strength on the final hill to regain the lead and handover in first place, 9 seconds clear of Smith in 12:03, recording the fastest leg of the day. Claire Leaver, a little apprehensive at taking over in the lead, ran very well in 13:38 to keep the team in medal position, dropping just 2 places to Durham City and Rotherham. With Helen Berry pulling out of the team due to a recent injury, Lucy Verrill valiantly stepped in at just 24 hours notice to compete in her first cross country race. Lucy had a terrific run in 14:55 bringing the team home in 9th place out of 22 complete teams.
