maggie-sykes-noeA record number of Holmfirth Harriers athletes and supporters travelled over to Leigh Sports Village on Saturday to compete in the Northern Athletics road relays. The weather could not have been better and made the day even more enjoyable for everyone.

Holmfirth fielded a record three teams in the senior women's event. Finishing times would suggest that the course was shorter than the 4100m advertised. With 63 athletes setting off on leg 1 and some very tight corners throughout the lap, athletes spent much of the race fighting for position. Helen Berry, for the A team, gradually made her way through the field to finish 14th in 13:34. Kath Farquhar and Claire Leaver both ran strongly recording the same time of 14:05 on legs 2 and 3 respectively and Margaret Sykes ran the anchor leg in 14:28 to bring the A team home in a credible 13th place out of 55 complete teams in 56:12. The B team of Helen Standing (15:00), Lesley Ewart (15:24), Cara Penfold (15:49) and Nikki Brown (15:08) put in a tremendous performance, finishing 24th team, ahead of many other club A teams, in 1:01:21. Holmfirth ladies C team included some recent recruits, with Diane Lee and Emma Serjeant competing for the first time for the club in a Championship event. Lucy Verrill led the C team out in 16:03, with Diane clocking 17:54 and Emma 19:14. Jo Bailey-Taylor brought the C team home in 51st place, with a strong finish around the final 350m of the track in 17:44, recording a total time of 1:10:55.

The event was won by Rotherham Harriers in 52:20. The fastest time of 12:00 was recorded by Lauren Howarth of host club Leigh Harriers.
