Northern Athletics Road Relays, Sat 31 March
Category: Ladies Published Date Hits: 735
Saturday saw a large contingent of Holmfirth Harriers and supporters travel across to Sefton Park in Liverpool to contest the Northern Athletics 6 and 12 stage road relays. Sefton Park was an ideal location for fast road relays and provided both spectators and athletes with a pleasant backdrop to the day's racing. With a mild cloudy day everything was set for great day of competition.
The ladies 6 stage race was run over the same 2.5 mile course as the men's short leg. First off for the 'A' team was Ladies Captain, Helen Berry, who made a strong start for the team. In sixth place until the final 10 metres to the finish she was pipped to the line by two other runners, leaving Holmfirth in 8th in a time of 13:43. Holmfirth ladies had enough willing competitors to field a 'B' team which was led off by Cara Penfold in her first race for a couple of months. Cara benefited from the fast pace to record a time of 16:14 coming home in 33rd place, out of a total of 39 leg 1 runners.
Kath Farquhar ran well, dropping just one place for the 'A' team on leg 2 in a time of 14:21. Nikki Brown, in her first open road relay event for the club, had an excellent run for the 'B' team in 15:18, picking up four places to hand over in 29th position.
The 'A' team moved up to 7th place on leg 3, thanks to Claire Leaver's performance in 14:32. Julia Johnson for the 'B' team was delighted with her performance, which took the 'B' team up to 20th place, in time of 15:24. By now the field was becoming increasingly spread out, making it harder to pick up places, however with the men running at the same time and around the same course there were still plenty of athletes to chase! Fourth leg runner for the 'A' team was Jacqui Khouiery, fresh from last weekend's Thirsk 10, who put in a solid performance dropping just 2 places in 14:59. The 'B' team continued to move up the field to 19th place, thanks to Lesley Ewart's run of 16:02.
Margaret Sykes took over from Jacqui for the 'A' team on leg 5 and, although more comfortable with the longer distances, had a great run over this short course in 14:31 and picking up one place in 8th. Debbie Hall continued the rise of the 'B' team with a superb run in 15:24, gaining a further 4 places to handover to the final leg in 15th place.
The anchor leg for the 'A' team was taken on by Katie Walshaw, who took her strength from a fantastic cross country season to storm around leg 6 in a time of 13:19, to bring the team home in 8th place in an overall time of 1:25:25. Yvette Arthur also held the position on the final leg for the 'B' team in 15th place in 16:27 and recording an overall time of 1:34:49. The event was won by Rotherham Harriers in 1:21:35 and the fastest time recorded was 12:25 by Eleanor Baker of Stockport Harriers.
