Two of Holmfirth Harriers leading athletes made the long journey to Glasgow at the weekend to represent the North of England in the Home Countries Cross Country International. Katie Walshaw and Helen Berry made up half the ladies team for the North, in a race that saw teams from all Home Countries (England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland) as well as the Combined Services and Midlands Counties.

This was to be the closing cross country race of the season and, although a muddy and hard-going course, the sun shone and conditions were perfect for the athletes. Team Managers, fellow athletes and supporters were able to see most of the spectacle with the course was a short loop, run four times for the senior women's 7.1km race.

With a field of only 24 runners, the athletes became spread out early on into the race but Katie kept her eye on the leading England runners. She had an excellent race, finishing 8th and the first home for the North in a time of 26:11, ahead of several Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland vests. Helen, in her first outing for the North at senior level, ran strongly throughout, working her way through the field to finish a pleasing 19th place. Both Holmfirth athletes were selected based on their performance in the Northern Athletics Cross Country Championships back in January. The race was won by England's Lauren Deadman in 25:24, who had finished 7th in the previous weekend's CAU Inter Counties Cross Country Championships. She and her team mates took the team prize, with the North of England ladies team finishing just outside the medals in fourth place.
