Yorkshire County AA Cross Country Championships

The Senior Ladies race was competed over a 5,750m, 3 lap course. Holmfirth's ladies have had a successful cross country season so far and we were hoping for a team medal, though competition at county level is always tough. With Katie Walshaw and Helen Berry having gained their Yorkshire vests in previous years, these individual performances were also very much a focus for Holmfirth in the ladies race. GB international, Hatti Dean, had gained pre-selection which left 8 Yorkshire team places up for grabs. Katie Walshaw made her usual fast start and was up with the leaders in the first lap but began to fade and part way into the second lap she pulled out of the race due to feeling unwell. Helen Berry, now first counter for the team, had a tremendous run and gave her performance of the season to finish 10th overall (21:57), her best placing in the County Championships as a senior. With two Juniors in the top 10, Helen's placing in the Senior race was 8th and therefore enough to gain selection for Yorkshire to run in the UKA Inter Counties Championships in Birmingham on March 10th. Claire Leaver ran a very well paced race and was pleased with her best result to date in these Championships in 20th place (22:57). Club stalwarts Kath Farquhar and Lucy Needham provided valuable support for the team, finishing in 33rd (23:42) and 49th (24:55) respectively and securing 5th team place. A further 4 Holmfirth ladies completed the race and therefore registered a 'B' team placing. Debbie Hall found the hills tough going but ran consistently to finish in 69th (25:56), closely followed by Cara Penfold in 74th (26:15). Kate Franklin, in her first time out over the country for Holmfirth, ran well in 84th and Jo Bailey-Taylor completed the team in 110th place (31:06), giving the 'B' team 17th place. Well done to all the Holmfirth ladies!! The race was won by junior lady Jennifer Walsh of Spenborough in a time of 21:04. Bingley won the team event and 120 athletes finished the course.
