Busy Weekend for Holmfirth Vets

Jonny and Maggie Sykes Making it a family double
as first male and female Harriers home in the
YVAA GP at Pudsey.

Last weekend Holmfirth Harriers Veterans were racing in the YVAA multi-terrain GP at Pudsey, the Manchester Half Marathon and the British Fell and Hill Championships at Loch Lomond, Scotland. The multi-terrain GP at Pudsey, number 7 of an 8 race series, was over a tough 5.75 mile course. Jonny Sykes, M50, was 1st Harrier home in 14th in a time of 40:00 and was followed by Margaret Sykes, making it a family double, in 21st, 1st Lady and 1st F45 in 41:25. Next came Rob Kersey 66th, 2nd M65, 47:04; Rosemary Baker 87th, 2nd F55, 49:32 and Neil Midgley 105th, M65, 51:37. Eleven Harrier Vets made the start line at the Manchester Half Marathon with perhaps the “best” performance coming from Juan Biurrun who improved his PB by 12 minutes. First Harrier home was Seton Waddington, M35 in 1:30:33 followed by Nicola Brown, F40, 1:31:54; Lorraine Smith, F45, 1:34:14; Matthew Rose, M40, 1:35:27; Simon Jacobs, M35, 1:36:55; Helen Pettit, F50, 1:38:43; Damien McQueen, M40, 1:38:49; Juan Biurrun, M35, 1:40:50; Debbie Beck, F45, 1:56:14; Alison Smith, F40, 1:58:31 and Jen Wolstenholme F35 2:06:50.

The Harriers sent 3 teams up to Scotland for the British Fell and Hill Championships, an open men’s team, a mixed male / female team and an M50+ team. In the M50+ team David Milton ran the 1st leg in 37:07 coming home 95th; Julian Rank and Andy Shaw the 2nd leg, 61st fastest in 1:44:47; Phil Hobbs and Ian Goulding 63rd fastest on leg 3 in 2:09:40 and Mark Law 63rd fastest on the last leg in 57:14. In the other teams Keelan Serjeant, M35 ran 33:39 on leg 1, 71st; Chris Beadle and Jim Durrans, both M45, 2:54:34 on leg3, 91st and Dan Shaw, M35, 50:45 on leg 4, 35th. Mike Fanning, M35, a 2nd claim member of Holmfirth, who runs for Borrowdale on the fells, was 11th on leg 1 in 26:00.
