On Sunday 24th Holmfirth Harriers hosted the first race in the 2016 YVAA Multi-terrain GP series. 154 runners from 21 Yorkshire clubs took part in the tough 6 mile course from Neiley to Thurstonland, Farnley Tyas and then back to Neiley taking in woodland, fields, farm tracks and the occasional short sections of road. Conditions under foot were generally good with just two short muddy sections to negotiate, unlike last year when torrential rain the night before made for a very wet course. With over 50 Harriers involved in helping to put on the race many had given up the chance to run by marshalling or similar. Those that did run having, by enlarge, helped setting up from early morning as well as running. Thanks to everyone that helped in whatever capacity.

In the women’s race won by Tanya Seagar of Stainland the first Holmfirth finisher was 5th lady Lorraine Smith 2nd F45, 50:13 followed by 9th Lesley Ewart 1st F60, 50:56; 13th Liz Woodfield F35, 52:31; 18th Rosemary Baker 1st F55,54:04; 39th Linda Hayles, F60, 60:16; 59th Diane Harper F45, 72:35. I think Linda and Diane may well be new to the multi-terrain series so we hope they enjoyed them and try some of the other 8 races to come in the series.

In the men’s race won by Gavin Mulholland of Stainland, first Harrier home was 17th Chris Beadle 3rd M45, 45:24 followed by 24th new member Steve Berridge M55, 47:19; 31st Andy Hauser 1st M60, 48:17; 32nd Craig Noble M35, 48:25; 39th Richard McLeod M45, 49:16; 46th Ian Goulding M50, 50:30; 53rd Kevin Yewlett M60, 52:28; 71st Neil Midgley M65, 57:56; 85th Tim Cock 2nd M70, 64:38. Again it was good to see Craig and Steve at hopefully the first event of many.

The next race in the series is on Tuesday 24th May, hosted by Abbey Runners at West Park, N. Leeds. Details can be found at www.yvaa.org

Remember these events are for all. If you run with the club you can get round these events, ours is one of the toughest in terms of terrain. They are fantastic value at only £5 and lifts / transport are usually available to races.
