Saltaire, 10th October

The YVAA Road Relay Championships at Roberts Park, Saltaire on the 10th October saw a fantastic turnout of Holmfirth Harriers veteran (35+) runners. In all with travelling reserves we had 38 runners taking part making up 11 teams. It was especially pleasing to see some of the newer, less experienced club members taking part in this enjoyable event. The course took in the park, roadside footpath and canal / riverside paths. The route was superbly marshalled by host club Baildon and in all 69 teams took part.

In the F35 - 44 age group our 1st team was struck by disaster when initially Jacqui Khoueiry was prevented from getting to the event by an accident on the motorway (fortunately not injured), then Jo Bailey-Taylor who moved up from the 2nd team was injured within about 200m of the start of her leg so the team were unable to finish the race. A great pity as they were certainly in with a chance of a medal. Helen Berry ran the fastest leg of any female athlete completing the 2.9 mile course in 15:45.Our 2nd team of Sue Jones, Louise Walker and Jean Shotter, who dropped in at the last minute, when we couldn’t find reserve Alison Smith as she had volunteered to help Marshal not expecting to run, came back a very creditable 10th of 16 teams. The F45 – 54 1st team, with Margaret Sykes running the fastest F45 time in her 1st race after a long (and continuing battle with injury), Karen Sinkinson and Yvette Arthur were clear winners and the 2nd team did well to finish the team, with Clare Ash bravely hobbling round after pulling a calf muscle and Claire Whitwam also suffering a leg injury. Only Debbie Beck on leg one remaining injury free! The F55+ team were a clear 2nd with Lesley Ewart and Val Battye running 3rd and 4th fastest legs of the day and they were well supported by Alison Whitelegg.

In the Men’s event the M35 – 39 team of Juan Biurrun, Seton Waddington, John Field and Mark Owen, finished 6th just one second in front of a team from Baildon thanks to a sprint finish, to great cheers from those watching, by Mark Owen to just pip them on the line. In the M40 – 49 age group Dave Watson, on leg 3, ran the fastest leg of the day, 14:20 and was in fact fastest of any of the men. The whole team, Mike Fanning, Gary Graham, Dave and Sean McCaffrey put in solid performances and managed an excellent 3rd place overall. The 2nd team led by a very quick 16:12 by James Durrans, also put in a very solid performance coming 6th of 13 teams. James was supported by Sean Doyle, Jason Haigh and Matthew Rose. The M50 – 59 team, Ian Goulding, Andy Hauser and Darren Hanson and the 1st M60 – 69 team of Kevin Yewlett, Rob Kersey and Steve Beardsell both came in 3rd in their respective categories and the M60 – 69 2nd team of Neil Midgley, Martin Seddon and Bill Hunter were an excellent 5th. Well done to all those that took part, the travelling reserves and our supporters.
