The ladies take two medals

Eight teams of Harriers turned out for the 2014 YVAA Cross Country Relay Championships at Graves Park on the 18th of October. This event was incorporated within the Northern Cross Country Relay Championships with vets running in the same race as the open events.

This was an especially good turnout as many runners were also racing the next day in either the FRA relays or WYCC. One runner Garreth Humphries ran in the M40 team on Saturday, the FRA Relay on Sunday morning and then dashed back for WYCC in the afternoon, a tremendous effort for the club.

As usual the women’s teams showed their strength in depth even though a number of the fastest runners were missing.

A medal winning ladies 2nd team

Lorraine Smith having somehow missed the start by at least half a minute put in a tremendous effort to pull back into the pack and by the end of the first 2 mile leg had pulled back to 4th F35+team, Karen Sinkinson on leg 2 gained one place and Alison Smith held on to come home 3rd team. The F45+ 1st team of Maggie Sykes, Lesley Ewart and Kath Farquhar led the F45+ age group throughout to gain the gold medals and the second team of Yvette Arthur, Julia Johnson and Rosemary Baker all ran well to convincingly take 3rd thus Holmfirth took two out of the three medals.

In the men’s race we managed 5 teams and it was great to see some of our less experienced and slower runners getting involved.

In the M35+ team Dan Shaw much the fastest of our trio went on the first leg and came back a good second, Mark Owen and Juan Biurrun came up against tough opposition but gave everthing and the team eventually finished 5th.

Dave Watson

Dave Watson - fastest veteran
leg of the day

For M40+ team Dave Watson ran the fastest veteran leg of the day on leg 1, Gareth Humphries had his lead cut down to just a few seconds by the end of leg 2 and Chris Beadle had to give way to a much faster Hallamshire runner on leg 3 but still finished 2nd to win the silver medals.

The M50+ team of Mark Law, Andy Hauser and John Ewart again came up against some tough opposition and with John and Andy going into the M60 age group next year did well to finish 4th.

For M60+ team Rob Kersey paid the price of a fast start trying to keep with much younger runners and was caught first by Rotherham and then by the Sheffield 1st leg runner. These two continued to swap positions through the race until Rob managed to get away over the last 400m to finish 2nd M60+. John Philpott having recently finished the Chester marathon had unfortunately been suffering with a tooth infection all week and consequently was much below par but bravely battled on to finish leg 2 in 4th with Phil Senior holding his position on leg 3. The 2nd M60+ team of Tim Cock, Roger Bradley and Martin Seddon all put in good performances to finish 5th.
