YVAA Multi-terrain 2014

YVAA Multi-terrain GP 2 2014

On Sunday Holmfirth Harriers hosted the second multi-terrain Grand Prix race in the 2014 YVAA series. These races, for those that have not run them before, are spread throughout the year over Yorkshire (most in W. Yorks.) and consist of races of from about 4 to 6 miles over a variety of multi-terrain courses. Some like ours include some hard hill sections and others like York are relatively flat. Most races are between 60 and 90% off road / tarmac and they are aimed at all levels of running speed. As can be seen by Sunday’s results at www.yvaa.org   we had several runners over 70 and one over 85!

The start of the race

If you want convincing they are enjoyable have a look at these photos:

There are loads of spot prizes as well as age group prizes in the usual 5 year age group categories.  Most runners were several minutes slower than last year due to the mud! Runners were treated to three freshly ploughed fields to negotiate just to add an extra challenge, a bonus resulting from running the race in March rather than July!

While it was disappointing to see so few new Holmfirth runners taking advantage of this race hosted by the club, those that did run produced some excellent runs, both in terms of 1st 3 age category places and just in getting round the course in the muddy conditions. Most runners were several minutes slower than last year due to the mud!

  A happy Kevin with prize

I would like to thank the 45 Harriers (and family members) that helped on the day setting up the field, marshalling and all the other roles needed to put on a race. Many thanks also to those that donated food for the after race refreshments (and of course Den who organised them) and raffle prizes. As well as being an advert for the club the race will have made about £390 for club funds so well done all those that helped and took part.

Thanks also to St John who provided safety cover for the race and I’m pleased to say only had one minor injury – Debbie Hall grabbing the barbed wire fence when she stumbled on a path near Farnley Tyas. She carried on, shepherded by nurse Pettit, to finish 6th so didn’t let it slow her down!
