Harrier Vets finish season off in style.

Harriers Vets Finish Off Season In Style

The YVAA Fell Championships at Meltham included in the Cop Hill Fell Race hosted by Meltham AC and the last race in the Multi-terrain GP series at Cleckheaton hosted by Spenborough AC brought the 2013 YVAA season to a close for another year. Once again the races organised by YVAA have seen a tremendous turnout of Yorkshire veteran runners in a wonderfully friendly but nevertheless competitive atmosphere.

The Cop Hill race brought its usual muddy conditions but the weather was great for running and most people seemed to enjoy the mud anyway! As well as winning the team event in both the men’s and women’s categories individual success was earned by Jonny Mclean 1st M35, James Durrans 3rd M40, Helen Berry 1st F35 (and 1st lady), Rob Kersey 3rd M60, Barbara Hinchliffe 1st F55, Jean Shotter 1st F50, Clare Ash 3rd F45, Steve Hewitt 2nd M55, Bill Hunter 3rd M65 and including non vets a total of 22 Harriers took part.

The following Sunday at the last multi-terrain race for 2013 fifteen Harriers made the short trip to Cleckheaton. After observing a 2 minute silence before the start over 220 runners set off in glorious sunshine. Once again Dave Watson M40 and Margaret Sykes F40 won their respective races well clear of the second place runners. Margaret was backed up by Lesley Ewart 9th, 1st F55, in her first race of the year; Rosemary Baker 26th, F50 and Den Kersey 63rd, F60 and in the Men’s race Dave was supported by Jonny Sykes 12th, M50; John Ewart 18th, 2nd M55; Gary Graham 38th, M45; Rob Kersey 56th, 3rd M60; Kevin Yewlett 58th, M60; Julio d’Escrivan 59th, M50; Simon Edwards 97th, M35; Neil Midgley 100th, M60; Bill Wade 115th, 3rd M70 and Tim Cock M70.

Tim as many will know is struggling with his back but was determined to complete the course even if he crawled round on all fours. We hope his back pain can be controlled enough to allow him to continue to run next season.

The 2014 season’s events will be on the YVAA website (www.yvaa.org) and the Holmfirth Harriers website (www.holmfirthharriers.com) as well as the Vets notice board at the club as soon as they are finalised.
