YVAA & Northern XC Relays 2013 - Graves Park

Harriers Veterans Bring Back More Medals at YVAA CC Championships

Created with Admarket's flickrSLiDR.

Last Saturday Holmfirth Harriers veteran runners joined the juniors and seniors for a day of Cross Country Relay Races at Graves Park, Sheffield. Once again blessed by fine weather this event is a real family affair with an excellent turnout for the club right across the age groups. The veterans (35 years and over) were competing in the YVAA CC Championships and although the women’s teams were decimated in the last week by injuries to key members, leading to the loss of the F45 – 54 and F55+ teams, we still managed 5 teams in the competition. Certain female members seem to be throwing themselves full length on the ground causing grazed and swollen knees. I’m not sure if this is a new religious cult, too much drink, a desperate attempt to stop them running in the CC relays or just their age, but they won’t escape the call!

First off were the senior and veteran ladies and with all age groups starting together keeping track of where each team was relative to their age group competition was difficult. Jacqui Khoueiry ran the first leg for Holmfirth and ran 13:07 for the 2 miles to give the team a 36 second lead over Barnsley AC. Jacqui handed over to Kath Farquhar who again ran a fantastic leg of 13:02 to open the gap up to 1minute 17 seconds before handing on to Margaret Sykes for the last leg. She stormed round in 12:50, further extending the lead to 2minutes 56 seconds to gain the 1st place trophies. Margaret, Kath and Jacqui also ran the fastest three times, in their age group.

In the men’s event we managed 4 teams – two M40 – 49, one M50 and one M60 – 69.

In the M40 – 49 race the ‘A’ team was led off by Dave Watson who ran the fastest time of the day in his age category, finishing in 10:45. Dave handed over to Gareth Humphries who ran strongly in 12:14 just losing one place to Hallamshire and James Durrans, by his own admission “short of running” hung on well to retain 2nd place with 12:28. The second team was lead of by Maz Khoueiry who came in 6th in 13:04 and handed onto Andy Vaughan, taking part in his first team race for the club, who retained 6th place with 15:56. On the final leg was Julio d’Escrivan a new member running his first event for the club. Even though a 53 year old running in the M40 race, he maintained the teams place with an excellent 14:35.

The M50 – 59 race turned out to be a repeat of the battle between Holmfirth and Sheffield AC that ended with a Holmfirth victory at the Road Relays in September. Both clubs fielded the same teams and once again Julian Rose got the Holmfirth team off to a great start with the fastest time of the day of 11:43 some 28 seconds ahead of Sheffield. John Ewart, now in the M55 age group, was again closed down but managed to hang on to hand over a 7 second lead to Jonny Sykes at the end of leg 2. By half way round the last lap this lead was down to just a couple of paces but thereafter Jonny gradually pulled away to win once again with a 29 second cushion. In the M60 – 69 race the Holmfirth trio of Richard Smith, 17:26; Phil Senior, 15:42 and Rob Kersey, 14:50 gained a position moving from third to second M60 team due to Rotherham having no last leg runner.

Many thanks to all those that ran and those that offered but for whom we couldn’t make a complete team.

The last race in the Multi-terrain GP series is at Cleckheaton from the running track on Sunday November 10th and the previous weekend sees the YVAA Fell Championships at Meltham.
