Holmfirth Harriers Vets Gain Success in Record Entry Race
A small team of Holmfirth Harriers travelled to Kirkstall Abbey for the third race in the YVAA Multi-terrain Grand Prix Series, hosted by Kirkstall Harriers, on Tuesday 22nd May. The park with the brooding abbey ruins make for an atmospheric backdrop to the start / finish area and the beautiful warm evening brought out a record entry of 314 runners causing the start to be delayed by about 15 minutes. Although we only managed 9 runners the team ran superbly and gained a number of "first three in age group" places most notable amongst them being the first man and first lady finishers in Dave Watson and Margaret Sykes. While travelling to midweek races is always more difficult for our members living on the outskirts of the area we really need greater numbers to make an impact as a team so it would be great to see a few more of our several hundred veteran members join us at these friendly, enjoyable and incredibly cheap races.
Holmfirth Finishers:
1st and 1st M40 Dave Watson; 7th, 1st M55 John Ewart; 32nd, 8th M45 Dave Roberts; 34th, 1st lady and 1st F40 Margaret Sykes; 59th, 2nd M60 Steve Beardsell; 97th, 1st F55 Lesley Ewart; 151st, 3rd M70 Bill Wade; 153rd, 4th F50 Rosemary Baker; 186th, 4th M70 Tim Cock.
The next race in the series is on Tuesday 29th May, Grand Prix Race 4 at Bingley. This is almost entirely off road and includes some steady climbs and fast descents and is definitely one for good chunky soled/studded shoes especially if wet.
The next Road Championship event is the two lap 5 mile championships, held within the Bronte 5, at Howarth on Thursday 7th June. Details and entry forms can be found at www.yvaa.org .
Transport
With the price of petrol rocketing and likely to increase it makes sense to share lifts where ever possible. Tim and I tend to take turns at driving and usually have a spare seat. I'm sure others would be equally willing to give a lift / have a lift and share petrol costs. If you can offer a lift or need a lift either put your name on the notice on the Vets Board or contact me and I will try to put people in touch.
