English Fell Championships at Coniston

Saturday saw the second counter in the English Fell Championships at Coniston. Last year the race was a counter in the club championship, so a number of Harriers had the benefit of knowing the course though this time they were surrounded by a couple of hundred more competitors!

I felt really old when I realised that the last time I did this race, or at least part of it, was about 20 years ago when they held a junior race as part of the English Junior Championship series!

Traditionally held on Bank Holiday weekend, the event seems to attract as many people for the race itself as it does for the post-race entertainment! A huge marquee erected in the grounds of the Sports club hosted a ceilidh on Saturday night and a band on the Sunday night. The Sports ground became a make shift campsite with various camper vans (not quite all up to Gavin’s standard of van!) and tents. Perhaps John and Gavin can report on the social side of the weekend!!

The race covers 9 miles and 3500 feet of climb, taking in the summits of Wetherlam, Swirl How and Old Man, with some fantastic views from the summits (I wasn’t going all that way and not admiring the view!). We had a total of 9 Harriers set off, though unfortunately for Fell Secretary Tom Brunt he had to retire. I’m not sure if I speak just for myself but Nathan, Sophie and I had all done the 3 Peaks the previous week and I for one was rather tired!

The weather on the morning of the race was beautiful and sunny, but by the time we were up on top of Coniston Old Man, the heavens opened and the hailstones made for a rather slippery decent off Old Man and through the slate mine. The rain continued but it didn’t seem to dampen spirits…… not even for the happy campers!!

Ian Holmes of Bingley won the race for the 9 th time and Scunthorpe’s Emma Clayton won the ladies race.

Herod Farm, Wednesday 14 April 2010

A record turnout at the Herod Farm fell race last Wednesday evening - in general and from Harriers too. We had the fell captain, the ladies captain and the club captain – plus 10 more of us who don’t have official titles, but were keen to make the most of the light nights/absence of rain and pick up a few championship points into the bargain. The race itself is only three miles but there are two big climbs totalling 1100 feet, hence its rating as an ‘AS’. That’s A for ‘lots of up’, S for short. First man home was Stuart Bond of Dark Peak in 23 minutes 4 seconds. Zanthe Wray, also of Dark Peak (snap), won the ladies race in 28 minutes 56 seconds (31st overall). Tom was first of the Harriers back at base, running a personal best to finish third in
24:25. Bill took fifth place in 25:01, this time getting the measure of Salford youngster Ryan Gould, who finished ahead in the Ian Roberts fell race in March. John E was the third Harrier to finish, just missing out on the V50 prize. He crossed the line in 25th place (28:34), one place behind V50 winner Dale Hartley. For the ladies, Helen finished well up the field in 38th place (29:48), coming second in the ladies race. Dark Peak were winners of the men’s team prize, though owing to a counting error
their prize (a four-pack of Budweiser each) was erroneously awarded to the Macclesfield Harriers team. The ladies team prize went to Pennine, with Holmfirth ladies missing out by the narrowest of margins. And I really do mean narrow. Based
on the ladies positions, both teams got 19 points but Pennine had the higher-placed third counter. The race was sponsored by Joe Barber (Plumbers) Ltd in Glossop, so all cans of lager, bottles of cheap white wine, and Easter eggs that were given out as prizes were adorned with a picture of a semi-naked woman taking a shower. Thanks, Joe.

Results:
3 Tom Brunt (24:25), 5 Bill Stewart (25:01), 25 John Ewart (28:34), 38 Helen Berry (29.48), 50 Philip Hobbs (30:44), 57 Chris Beadle (31:02), 67 Andrei Vais (31:43), 88 Paula Gould (34:23), 98 Robert Halstead (35:30), 102 Karen Sinkinson (36:06), 105 Deborah Hall (36:31), 113 Rebecca Halstead (36:54), 128 Sophie Barraclough (40:26).

Welcome to the fell running section. If you’re pining after bogs and wet Walshes this is the next best thing. Holmfirth Harriers has a long and glorious history or running on the fells. Recent achievements include three consecutive wins in the Old County Tops for Tom Brunt and a bronze medal in the Yorkshire championships for Lisa Lacon. On the team front we have had a series of solid performances in the FRA relays and the Ian Hodgson. In the Calderdale Way Relay the women were 4th and the men equalled their best ever performance with a magnificent 3rd place.
