28th Neiley Junior Cross Country Race Series


Race 1 + 2 results

2016 will be the 28th running of the Holme Valley Junior Schools Summer Cross Country League races. We had 1081 children entered from 28 schools in 2014. There were 33 schools in 2015.

The school will enter your child. Entries from individuals will not be accepted unless they are home-educated, in which case email us and we can see what we can do.

When entries are sent in, it is essential that it is clear which category your school falls into, so please tell us, see below for categories.

Rules - Sorry but there have to be some !!!

The races in 2016 will follow the same format as 2015. There will be 4 races in each of the 3 meetings. There will be 2 small school category awards in each race. The small school definition will be as follows :

  1. Having a maximum of 75 children at Key Stage 2
  2. Having a maximum of 150 children at Key Stage 2

For the open team awards it will be the first 4 runners to count in each race and there will also be a runners up team award. For the small school awards it will the first 3 runners to count in each race. As last year if a small school wins the open team award and the small team award, they can only take one award, which will be the most prestigious, this being the open award. The small team award will then pass on to the second placed small school.

Course discipline is important

Failure to abide by these two safety critical rules could lead to disqualification from the event or loss of points for the school.

Race Day


For the first race only, the teacher or person in charge of each school group should collect the race numbers and safety pins from the desk in front of or in the Neiley pavilion. Please allow time to distribute these before the races begin.

Notice for Teachers: Please make sure that once you have the race numbers that your pupils will be able to find you as there will be well over 1000 people on the field. Please carry a flag or small sign on a pole to hold up.

Please ensure all children retain their numbers and 4 pins for the other 2 races.

Please use a pin in each corner to attach the race number to the front of your child so it is clearly visible.

Please if any child retires during the race please inform someone at the finish so that the race number can be checked off.

There will be separate races for boys and girls each split into 2 age groups: Years 3 & 4 in one race and 5 & 6 in another.

Approximate Race Times :

Water will be available near the finish line for the runners after they have raced. Water is also available in the pavilion.

Facilities and car parking

Toilets are available in the pavilion. 

Car parking will be at the Neiley pavilion accessed from New Mill Road and on the hard play area accessed through the gate on Gynn Lane, Honley close to the junction with New Mill Road. If that parking is unavailable due to the weather, the Head Teacher at Honley High School, has kindly agreed to allow us to use the parking at the school which is accessed off Station Road. In either case road signs and marshals will assist.  

Please park sensibly & not in the coned off area; do not cause access problems for our local residents.

Sweets and drinks will be on sale near the pavilion and toilets are available inside


As well as a certificate for every individual who completes all three races, a number of other awards are given at the end of the three race series to both individuals and teams. These awards are detailed below :



Overall: The first four finishers from each school in each race will comprise an overall team.

First overall receives a shield to be held for 1 year.

Medium school: The first three finishers comprise the team. The winning team will receive a shield to be held for 1 year

Small school: The first three finishers comprise the team. The winning team will receive a shield to be held for 1 year.

If a small or medium school wins an overall award, they can only take one award. This will be the most prestigious, i.e. either the overall or 1st in their schools category. The relinquished award would then pass to the second place in the category.
