Five team gold performances for Harriers at Race One of West Yorkshire Cross Country League

The sun shone gold on Sunday for Holmfirth Harriers Athletes at Nunroyd Park in Guisley. The unparalleled successes of Holmfirth harriers in the 2009 league were surpassed with superb individual and team performances from Junior and Senior Athletes, Holmfirth teams winning 5 of the 10 races, and Holmfirth Athletes on the podium in 5.

Individual winners were Lewis Byram, and Katie Walshaw; Lewis continuing his domination of the U13 boys event, Katie Walshaw taking first place for the first time in the senior ladies race, like Lewis leading from the gun. Other podium athletes were Jimmy Burke, in his first race in a Holmfirth vest finishing a close 2 nd in the U11 race, Helen Berry and Matthew Pierson, both second place in senior women and men’s race respectively, Olivia Sykes 2 nd and Erica Byram 3 rd in the U13 girls and Harmonie Waterman 3 rd the U15 girls race.

The U11 boys first race of the day and 1 st Holmfirth team victory, Jimmy’s 2 nd place backed up by Arron Gill 7 th, Finn Kerry 10 th and Nicky Farquhar 12 th, the later 3 separated by 5 seconds. Also running superbly and all running for the 1 st time in the league were Bailey Bedford in 18 th, Daniel Howatson 22 nd and George and Harry Hobbs 30 th and 34 th.

Another race another victory, U11 girls team lead home by Libby Shepherd in 8 th place and Sunnivah Waterman in 9 th with Amy Kettlewell completing the girl’s team in 13 th. Charlotte Eastwood in her 1 st race as a Harrier ran superbly for 18 th place and other first timers Holly Bailey-Taylor, Emily Gabbitas and Emmy Bailey-Taylor also ran really well.

The U13 boy’s race was a treat for our supporters with 10 Holmfirth athletes competing. Lewis ran with great composure to finish in first, Bradley Bedford was next home for the team moving through the field and finishing a fantastic 4 th, Aaron Kettlewell consistent as ever remained strong in 8 th and Thomas Dickens ran his socks off to get home in 16 th and just pip City of York for 1 st team. In their first league outings Daniel Levitt and Lewis Bartholemew showed great potential finishing in 22 nd and 24 th positions and Shea Kerry continued his recent improvement in 29 th. Sam Gabbitass also ran well in his first League race for 38 th and Joe Williams and Isaac Shepherd completed the Holmfirth contingent in 42 nd and 46 th this also Isaac’s 1 st cross country race.

Together with Lewis Byram and Aaron Kettlewell in the boys race the winning Holmfirth girls team in the U13 race had all raced the previous day in the Northern Cross Country relays (finishing 6 th team) there were no excuses from any of these juniors of having tired legs, Olivia and Erica both stormed through the field in the last section of the race to finish 2 nd and 3 rd, Lucy Byram completed the winning trio in 23 rd. Daisy-Mae Hinchliffe also moved well through the field in the later stages to finish 30 th Genevieve Durrans in her 1 st cross country race ran really strongly in 35 th.

The U15 girls race was an open race until the final quarter of the race with 5 girls still in the leading pack. Harmonie Waterman hung on to eventual winner, Annabel Mason of Wakefield when she made a break for home and finished a fantastic 3 rd place. Ruby Sykes and Sophie Spencer both running strongly completed the team in 10 th and 17 th place. The team finished an excellent 3 rd.

Aaron Arthur was first home for the U15 boys running strongly in 28 th place in this his first league race as an U15. Also new in this age group Eddie Hinchliffe finished really strongly in 34 th. The U15 boy’s team was completed by Michael Booth in 43 rd place and Robert Hinchliffe 47 th. The team finished 7 th.

Sole Holmfirth representative in the U17 girls race Rebecca Addy ran well to finish in 15 th place as did Max Lawton our only runner in the U17 boys in 19 th place.

The Senior Ladies were looking to make a good start to the league to retain their team title, which they've held for 3 out of the last 4 seasons, and they did not disappoint. Katie Walshaw led the field from the gun to finish in first place, though the positions behind her were more fiercely contested. Ladies Captain, Helen Berry, ran a well paced race moving through the field from 4th to 2nd in the last few minutes of the race. Kath Farquhar, who had been busy coaching the juniors to success in the hours before the senior race, had an excellent run to finish 8th place and 1st V40. Claire Leaver made up the 'A' team with another strong run in 12th place to ensure a first place for the team, 21 points clear of second placed Keighley & Craven. Next Harrier home was Lucy Griffiths in 19th place. Yvette Arthur, Cara Penfold (who only just made the start ) and Debbie Hall all continue to improve, finishing 39th, 44th and 53rd respectively. Zoe Storr made a welcome return to the cross country scene, having favoured the 400m on the track in recent years, and finished well in 65th place. 9 The 'B' team finished 6th team ahead a several 'A' teams. 90 runners completed the women's race.

Welcome to the Cross Country pages of Holmfirth Harriers AC. If you’re new to cross country or just thinking about having ago then Holmfirth competes in the WYCC league. This is a series of 4 races, usually in October, November and December (see Race Calendar on Website) and these races are suitable for runners of all abilities. Races start in the morning for juniors, with the senior women usually running at about 1.00pm and the senior men at about 2.00pm. Races are usually in parkland settings but in wet weather can be very muddy when studded shoes or ideally cross country spikes should be worn. In very dry conditions trail shoes can sometimes be used. If you are interested in having ago then talk to Roger Bradley, John Ewart or Helen Berry a.s.a.p. The entry sheet is on the Cross Country notice board and the cost is £7 for all 4 races.

Holmfirth Harriers also compete in the Yorkshire, Northern and English National CC Championships plus the YVAA CC Championships (see Vets Pages) which usually take place in January / February.

In order to get a Cross Country Page up and running on the website I (Rob K) am putting this together but really have more than enough to do with the Vets so if anyone would like to take over and put info., photos, race reports or whatever you like onto the page, then please contact me (contact on Vets page). It is only a short season with one or at the most two events in a month from October to February.
