Marbury Park Junior Duathlon

The first outing of the season saw just 4 Holmfirth triathletes travel to the North West to take part in the Marbury Park Junior Duathlon, organised by Warrington Tri Club.  This very friendly event saw 87 young triathletes take on this event through this fantastic park.  First Harriers up were sisters Erica and Lucy Byram in Tristar 2.  First the two lap run saw Erica take the lead from the gun, closely followed by her sister Lucy.  At the end of the two laps Erica was first into transition followed in fourth place by Lucy.  But out on the bike Lucy quickly moved into second place before the end of the first of the four bike laps.  Using their bike skills Erica and Lucy worked hard together to take a minute lead on to the final run.  Out on the final run lap Erica once again took the lead and came home in 24:26 followed by Lucy in 2nd in 24:43. 


Next up was Lewis Byram, who had raced the day before at the Inter Counties, raced in Tristar 3.  A different distance but also comprised of 2 run/4 bike/1 run lap.  Lewis led the first run almost from the off and headed into T1 in first place.  However, going to his bike found it not to be where he left it and had to look around loosing valuable time.  He managed to get out onto the first bike lap and with another rider they were in 1st and 2nd place comfortably working together.  With the tight turn around at each lap Lewis fell off his bike and lost contact with his fellow competitor who took advantage of the fall.  Lewis was unable to get back on his wheel and came off the bike onto the final run in 2nd.  Lewis quickly closed on the winner but the final run not quite long enough was unable to make up the ground and finished 2ndin 26:43 over 2 minutes ahead of the next athlete.


For the first time this season Sophie Williams having just moved up to the Youth age group entered a field with both boys and girls at the start of the race.  A huge step up for all the athletes in this age group tackling a distance of a 3k run/ 10k bike /1k run.  Sophie had a fantastic first run leg around the park and quickly moved through transition onto the bike section.  Over the four lap course Sophie worked hard on the bike and looked stronger on each lap.  Cheered on by her mum, the Byrams and marshals, Sophie went out onto the final run lap.  Sophie completed the course in arespectable 52:17 and 5thplace in a field of Youth and Junior triathletes.  Sophiewas very pleased to finish and receive her gingerbread man!

Welcome to the Triathlon section of Holmfirth Harriers.  This section started in 2005 and has steadily grown in size since.


2009 is currently our best year for both our Junior and Senior Triathletes, winning many of our individual Age Groups at races throughout the Region.


It is down to the hard work of Holmfirth Harriers and our coaches that have got us into this strong position and we hope to use this as a springboard for future success.


Triathlon is one of the countries fastest growing sports and we are committed to ensuring that there is a warm welcome for new athletes of all ages and abilities (it really doesn’t matter if you can’t swim as many of our new starters couldn’t either when they started – me included/especially).


I hope that you find this page useful, and hope to add more throughout the season, until then, I hope you all enjoy your racing and achieve your goals.

What is triathlon

So what is a TRIATHLON? –tri meaning three is a good clue. There are 3 disciplines in triathlon SWIMMING, CYCLING AND RUNNING all done following each other with no gaps only TRANSITION – the fourth discipline. Transition is where you leave your swimming cap, goggles and wet suit (if it has been an open water swim) and where you get your bike, helmet, sunglasses, cycling shoes and number plus whatever else you need i.e. socks,t shirt etc and off you go on your cycling bit then back to transition to leave your bike, helmet, cycling shoes etc and put on your running shoes ready for the last bit – the run!! That's it in a nutshell – but there is really so much more. It really is GREAT FUN!!

How do I train to become a triathlete? At Holmfirth Harriers we meet on a Tuesday and Thursday for running training. Depending on your ability there is a group you can run with and help you improve. Out of season many of our triathletes are very active with their running and take part in Cross Country and Fell races. These are open to juniors and adults and is fantastic training. Swimming at the moment is at Holmfirth Pool on various days. Over the summer we hold run/bike training and over the winter indoor turbo training.
