Report for Denis Stitt Memorial Fell Race

On Thursday 19th August, Holmfirth Harriers hosted the annual Denis Stitt Memorial Fell Race. On a cool drizzly evening with soft conditions underfoot, 59 runners toed the line for this short ‘A’ category race that now takes in two laps of a course starting and finishing at Cartworth Moor Cricket Club and taking in the fast descent to Ward Place and Malkin House Wood followed by a traverse through the wood and then the tough climb back up to the cricket club via fields and tracks.

Whatever the conditions, the start is always a frantic dash down the track away from the cricket club and this year was no exception. Stuart Bond of Dark Peak sprinted away from the rest of the field and maintained his lead, finishing in a new record time of 27.55, over 2 minutes ahead of his Dark Peak teammate Jon Morgan and 3rd placed Gavin Mulholland from Calder Valley. Stuart’s time was also the 2nd fastest of any time recorded including those on the old, slightly easier former route from the Victoria Pub. Bill Stewart was our highest placed finisher in 4th with a time of 30.53, with Julian Rank coming in 6th, at 32.55.

Our own Katie Walshaw broke the ladies record, finishing 7th overall in a time of 33:15. Following closely behind was Helen Berry, 14th overall in 35.27, with Barbara Hinchliffe the 3rd placed lady, 32nd overall in 40.51.

Not surprisingly, the mens’ team prize went to Dark Peak, whose 3rd placed runner was Jim Bell in 11th giving them 14 points; Holmfirth secured 2nd team with Bill, Julian and Steve Rimmer in 12th (34.54) giving a total of 22 points. Having the first 3 ladies to finish meant Holmfirth swept the team prize, with Meltham the only other club with a full ladies team finishing 2nd.

A good turnout from the Harriers, with 19 runners all desperate for some Championship points meant some close little battles further down the field. Our other finishers were 18th Chris Beadle (36.20), 24th Kevin Yewlett (38.32), 26th Phil Hobbs (39.20), 27th and in his first fell race, new recruit Paul Crowther (39.50), 35th Andrew Keast (41.15), 38th Rob Halstead (42.42), 43rd Andy Hambleton (43.30), 44th Sean Doyle (43.36), 46th & 4th lady Karen Sinkinson (43.56), 49th Richard Smith Senior (45.59), 52nd Neil Midgley (47.13), 53rd Richard Whale (47.30) and in 55th, running his 2nd race in 2 days, our very own V65 Tim Cock with a time of 48.15.

Although conditions got a little damp after the race, it didn’t stop the BBQ and the food went down well with the runners. Russell Bangham thanked his team of marshals, registration and time-keepers and also Cartworth Moor Cricket Club for the use of their facilities once again.
