Organising a race is rather like organising a party your major concern is “will anyone turn up?” , well of course we needn’t have worried the turnout from the junior section of the club was great and we spectators were treated to hard fought races in all the age categories.

First race of the afternoon was U11 girls, with a field of 12 runners several past race winners amongst them and loads of new talent the race was wide open. Keenan Fitton lead the girls back down on to the field and won the race in an excellent time of 9:00 closely followed by Eleanor Hoyle, the youngest in the race in 9:06 and also running out of her skin Charlotte Eastwood in 9:34. There were great runs right through the field with lots of girls improving on their times from last year. In this race however it was the 3 girls who took the 1 st 3 places who also finished in the top 3 on handicap, Eleanor 1 st, Charlotte 2 nd and Keenan 3 rd.

The U11 boys was also a close run affair, 3 boys emerging from the woods in quick succession. Jimmy Burke in only his 2 nd race as a Holmfirth Harrier managed to out run Arron Gill and finished in 1 st place in a time of 8:05, Arron followed him home in 8:12 with Nicky Farquhar 3 rd in 8:20 also well under 9 minutes was Finn Kerry in 8:37. In this race the handicap favoured some of the other runners a little down the field who managed to improve on previous performances and showed their potential. Daniel Howatson come out on top, he had a great run finishing in 9:01 and this was enough to win on handicap, George and Harry Hobbs both ran really strongly George just pipping Harry on handicap time and winning 2 nd place to Harry’s 3 rd.

Running the U13s and Over 13 girls together put the pressure on the big girls and made the race fascinating for the spectators. It was a real surprise when little Erica Byram shot out of the woods in 1 st place hotly pursued by Ruby Sykes in 2 nd. Ruby was closely followed by little sis Olivia. Erica finished in a blistering time of 14:59, fasted U13 girl, Olivia was 2 nd U13 girl in 15:17 and Lucy Byram 3 rd in 15:47. Ruby was fastest Over 13 in 15:09 followed by Lucy Farquhar in 15:42 and Sophie Spencer in 17:02. The U13 handicap was won by Daisy-Mae Hinchliffe followed by Lucy Hughes in 2 nd and Erica taking 3 rd spot. Sophie Williams took 1 st place in the Over 13 girl’s handicap, with Alex France in 2 nd and Jessica Gabbitas in 3 rd all three had strong runs with both Sophie and Alex improving on last year’s times. |

the Over 13 and U13s boy’s race was no less interesting. In particular It was great to have Max running with the younger boys especially as he was the one leading the race who had to deal with all the wildlife challenges we had put in place to slow him down. Stampeding llamas, bucking horses and 2 wild dogs, nearly got the better of him and allowed U13 Lewis Byram to get within sniffing distance however back on the field Max used his speed and strength and managed to get a gap on Lewis and finished in 12:38 with Lewis in 12:44 3 rd to cross the line was Aaron Arthur in 13:49, Aaron Kettlewell was just behind Aaron Arthur in 13:54 2 nd U13 and Ben Dickinson was next home and 3 rd U13 in 14:14. Robert Hinchliffe took 3 rd spot for the over 13s in 14:30. Daniel Ellis improved on last years time by over 2 minutes and was a worthy winner on handicap for the Over 13s, Aaron Arthur took a well deserved 2 nd spot and the Hinchcliffe boys(Robert and Eddie) tied for 3 rd. There were great runs from all the boys in the U13 boys race but there were 3 clear on the handicap all improving on their performances in previous races. Joe Williams took 1 st spot followed by Isaac Shepherd in 2 nd and Shea Kerry in 3 rd.

So with the serious racing over we settled down to enjoying the BBQ and fun and games which the triathlon committee had in store. It was great that so many stayed on and the fact that no one seemed to want to go home implied that everyone had a good time. Many thanks to everyone who helped with the races, and the BBQ and games, you know who you are and you are all wonderful!
