Ladies

Northern Athletics Road Relays, Catterick, Sunday 20th March

We had 9 athletes competing in the ladies 6 stage race, which was run over a 4km course which we all considered much better than the course at the same venue 3 years ago. Plus, it didn’t snow this year! In fact the weather was pretty much perfect for competitors and our trusty band of supporters.

First off for the ‘A’ team was all-rounder Katie Walshaw who made her usual fast start, finding herself in the top 3 for the first 600m. She settled into the race and ran strongly, getting the team off to a goo d start in 10th position (13:11). Ladies’ Vice Captain, Lesley Ewart, led the ‘B’ team on leg 1 coming home in 28th place, out of a total of 34 leg 1 runners in a time of 15:56.

Kath Farquhar ran very well, gaining 2 places for the ‘A’ team on leg 2 in a time of 13:45 and 9th fastest of the leg. Zoe Storr, who had travelled across from her new base in North Wales and in her first road relay event for the club, had a good run on leg 2 for the ‘B’ team in 15:44 and handing over in 25th position.

Ladies’ Captain, Helen Berry, had a strong run on leg 3, gaining valuable places for the team, finishing in 4th position (13:35) and 2nd fastest of the leg. Adrienne Dewhirst gave up her usual supporting role, valiantly stepping in to race for the ‘B’ team. She finished in 24th position in a time of 20:33. Due to a few athletes having to withdraw at short notice, the ‘B’ team was left incomplete.

Fourth leg runner for the ‘A’ team, Claire Leaver, who ran well amongst some high class runners, dropped just 3 places in a time of 14:05, which gave her the 8th fastest time on leg 4. Julia Johnson, who had been promoted to the ‘A’ team at relatively short notice, surprised herself by running a good time of 14:52 on leg 5, handing over in 9th position.

The final leg was run by Cara Penfold, who having raced regularly for Holmfirth ladies over the cross country season and stepped up her training, earned her place in the ‘A’ team, picking up one place (15:16) to bring the team home in 8th place in an overall time of 1:23:56. The event was won by Wakefield District Harriers in 1:19:56. The fastest time recorded was 12:09 by Eleanor Baker of Stockport Harriers.

Well done and thanks to all who took part! Next up is the National 6-stage event in Sutton Park on 9th April.
