Despite the sub zero temperatures, lying snow and rock hard ground over 30 intrepid juniors braved the conditions to take part in Holmfirth Harriers Xmas Handicaps held at Brooklands Nursery at Scholes. A number of runners had been unable to make it due to road conditions and illness but those who did make it put their all in and this resulted in some excellent races.
The first race off saw the under 11 girls take to the hillside with Lia Carter leading off. As the race neared its completion the field began to bunch up and with 200m to go it seemed that Charlotte Eastwood who had moved steadily through the field and was closing with every stride must pass Lia but as he closed to within a metre Lia responded with a determined sprint holding on to claim victory. Charlotte recorded the fastest time. Sunnivah Waterman overtook Talia Johnson in the final field to claim third with scratch runner Libby Shepherd in fifth. Amy Kettlewell who seemed to feel the cold more than most kept on bravely to the end to finish sixth.

The under 11 boy’s race saw the youngest runner on the day Callum Durrans put in an excellent front running performance to hold off a strong field to cross the line in first place with the rest of the field closely bunched behind him. Tiras Waterman just managed to hold off scratch runner Jimmy Burke and Nicky Farquhar to claim the runners up spot with Jimmy just edging 3rd place. These were closely followed home by Finn Kerry, Daniel Howatson and Aaron Gill, all the under 1’s had ran well and some close finishes warmed up the frozen spectators if not the runners. Jimmy recorded the fastest time.
The under 13 girl’s field was decimated by illness but the trio who took part certainly put in the effort and the winner Lucy Byram even managed a broad grin as she crossed the line, having been the scratch runner she passed the others on the final uphill section. Genevieve Durrans had been unable to make it a family double but showed how she is improving with a strong second place, from Daisy Mae Smith in Third.

The under 13 boy’s race saw one of the most improved juniors of the season Isaac Shepherd take the honours. Isaac who has improved with each run in the West Yorkshire X-Country League continued the upward trend with a fine run to hold off the fast finishing trio of Andrew Farquhar, Lewis Byram and Ben Dickinson. Andrew managed to hold onto 2nd despite almost missing the finish with Lewis passing Ben in the last 10metres to claim 3rd place and record the fastest time. Aaron Kettlewell whose best events are the 100m and Long Jump showed he can also run over the country by taking 5th in the second fastest race time. Daniel Levitt who had triumphed last year a close 6th having had a more stringent handicap with the final finisher Shea Kerry not far behind.

The final race for the girls saw Lucy Farquhar not only win the race but set the fastest time. Lucy put in a great effort but the cold really got to her and she was like many others in tears as she crossed the line. Sophie Spencer another who improves by the race held onto 2nd with the scratch runner Ruby Sykes coming home in 3rd being unable to close the gap on the first two. It is fair to say that Sophie Wiliams who completed the field probably disliked the conditions more than most but she kept going at a steady pace to finish.

The boys over 13 race saw Michael Booth rewarded for the effort he has put in during the winter despite one or two injury setbacks. He stormed round the cross in probably his best performance to date pulling away from the Hinchliffe brothers Robert and Eddie to take the title and also the trophy for the fastest time. Robert took the family honours by claiming second and Jake Richardson on his handicap debut taking 4th.

All the athletes deserve to be congratulated for the effort they put in and most were rewarded with a hot drink and slice of cake at Brooklands Coffee shop after the race. A big thanks goes out to the course organisers who were there 90mins before the races to set out the course, the handicappers and all those who helped on the morning.

Holmfirth Harriers would also like to thank Carl Brook for the use of the fields and the facilities at the nursery.
