Whittle Pike Fell Race, English Championship counter, 30th July

Last Saturday, 30th July, saw the penultimate race in this year’s English Fell Running Championship series, held across the Pennines in Lancashire.  The Whittle Pike fell race sets off from Waterfoot near Rossendale and climbs up from the village to Whittle Pike itself, taking in 1400 feet of ascent and covering just over 5 miles.

The men’s and women’s races were run separately and unusually it was not ‘ladies first’.  The early leader in the men’s race was Bingley’s Rob Jebb, but a fall which left him with a broken collar bone opened the race up to eventual winner Lloyd Taggart of Dark Peak Fell Runners in a time of 37:30.

Holmfirth Harriers’ sole representative amongst the men, Andy Hauser, was hoping to gain some more points to improve on his current bronze position in the over 55 category.   By his own admittance it wasn't a race that suited him with it being so rough under foot but he still had very good run finishing 5th V55 and an impressive 62nd overall out of 203 finishers.

The amber vest of Holmfirth Harriers was very much to the fore in the ladies race with recent England International Katie Walshaw joining the start line and team mate Helen Berry for the first time in the series.  Katie led the 76-strong field from the gun and despite a slight navigational error as she set off onto the fell, she managed to hold her position around the course, finishing almost a minute ahead of fellow England International Helen Fines of West Yorkshire club, Calder Valley.

Holmfirth’s Ladies Captain, Helen Berry, who has been contesting the English Championship again this year and is currently lying in third place overall, had a great run to finish in 4th place which was sufficient to maintain the bronze medal position.   The Championship results will be decided at the final race at Sedbergh Hills race on 21st August.

Full results (Holmfirth unless otherwise stated): Ladies’ race; 1st Katie Walshaw 45:47, 4th Helen Berry 47:39. Men’s race; 1st Lloyd Taggart (Dark Peak F.R.) 37:30, 62nd and 5th V55 Andy Hauser 45:57.

Welcome to the fell running section. If you have an aversion to tarmac and the prospect of scrambling up steep-sided hills and careering down the other side on paths mainly populated by nimble-footed sheep, come rain, shine or snow sounds like fun, then fell running is for you. Holmfirth Harriers has a long and glorious history of running on the fells. Recent individual achievements include three consecutive wins in the Old County Tops for Tom Brunt and a silver medal in the Yorkshire championships for Helen Berry. On the team front we have had a series of solid performances in the FRA relays and the Ian Hodgson. In the 2009 Calderdale Way Relay the women were 4th and the men equalled their best ever performance with a magnificent 3rd place.
