Junior Fell Championship update & current standings

With the completion of the Saddleworth races over the Spring Bank weekend, we are now exactly halfway through the 10 races in this year’s Championship. So far, 33 juniors have taken part, with an impressive 26 running at least twice.  The turnout at all the races has been fantastic & we have been rewarded with several top 3 places throughout all the age-groups.
With the best 5 races over the series to count, the tables will no doubt change significantly from their current position, but at the halfway point, Harry Hobbs (having completed all 5 races) is leading the U10 Boys by a single point from Callum Durrans, with Sunni Waterman ahead in the U10 Girls. Moving up to the U12 Boys, a very close battle is developing between Lewis Bartholomew, Tiras Waterman & Nicky Farquhar, who are only separated by 6 points, whilst the U12 Girls competition is equally tight, with Erica Byram just 4 points ahead of her sister Lucy, both having competed in all 5 races.

Eddie Hinchliffe, another ever-present, is 4 points ahead of Lewis Byram in the U14 Boys, whilst Sophie Spencer is showing a clean pair of heels in the U14 Girls’ competition! Finally, Robert Hinchliffe has the U16 Boys’ championship to himself & Ruby Sykes will be battling it out with Sophie Williams for the U16 Girls crown.

The next 2 races are on consecutive weekends – Clougha Pike this Saturday 18th June & then Arnison Dash on Sunday 26th June. Both are also English Championship races, so will be another good test for all our athletes.  Happily, the competition is having a knock-on effect at English Championship level, as after 2 races (in the 6 race series) Holmfirth are leading the Club Championship table, with points determined by the 3 best performances at each meeting. Let’s keep it going!

Welcome to the fell running section. If you have an aversion to tarmac and the prospect of scrambling up steep-sided hills and careering down the other side on paths mainly populated by nimble-footed sheep, come rain, shine or snow sounds like fun, then fell running is for you. Holmfirth Harriers has a long and glorious history of running on the fells. Recent individual achievements include three consecutive wins in the Old County Tops for Tom Brunt and a silver medal in the Yorkshire championships for Helen Berry. On the team front we have had a series of solid performances in the FRA relays and the Ian Hodgson. In the 2009 Calderdale Way Relay the women were 4th and the men equalled their best ever performance with a magnificent 3rd place.
