Ilkley Moor Junior Fell Races (27th February 2011)

For those brave souls who had contested the National XC championships at Alton Towers the previous weekend, one look at the starting field for this year’s Ilkley Moor races must have brought back bad memories of mud, mud & more mud! Heavy rain over the previous weeks, combined with heavy machinery being used for moorland restoration, had rendered the hillside a boggy mess. Undeterred and with a few half-term absentees, Holmfirth were still able to field 19 juniors throughout all the age groups and we once again had a number of top 3 finishers.
The course has something for everyone – stream crossings, muddy banks, heather, bracken, tussocks and a steep downhill finish with a little sting in the tail! For the U8’s, Lewis Hodgson had a good run, finishing 7th overall from 37 starters and was once again joined by Freya & Ben Durrans who enjoyed racing a new course and managed to keep their shoes on, unlike a few others!

The U10’s, U12’s, U14’s & U16’s set off together – a great sight as 124 runners tried to find the best line through the mud. Once across the stream and up the first muddy bank, there were plenty of Holmfirth vests to be seen. Lewis Byram led the field virtually from start to finish and won comfortably, breaking the U14 record by 13 seconds in a time of 6.43. Close behind, putting in another great performance finishing 4th overall (and 4th U14) came Eddie Hinchliffe in 7.44. Remarkably, in a combined age-group race, Lucy & Erica Byram finished 7th equal, 1st GU12’s and smashed that record by 27 seconds in a time of 7.55 – must be something in the Marsden water!

A little further back, Lewis Bartholomew finished 13th overall, 4th U12 in 8.13 and was followed shortly after by Finn Kerry, who ran strongly to finish in 8.37 – 22nd overall & 2nd U10. Sophie Spencer was our sole representative in the GU14’s, but still ran well to finish in 8.53, 29th overall & 4th GU14. Callum Durrans continues to show what a good athlete he is becoming by finishing 32nd overall, 4th U10, in a time of 8.56 – and this in walking boots, because his trainers had no grip! In the U16 & U18 2 mile challenge, Robert Hinchliffe ran very well, finishing 7th overall & 4th U16 in a time of 15.54.

All in all, another super effort from all the juniors in testing conditions underfoot and it was great to see so many smiling faces at the end, particularly when the spot prizes of additional goody bags or Cadbury’s Creme Eggs were awarded by club – and Holmfirth was called out second!

The next race on the junior calendar is Pendle on Saturday 2nd April, which this year is both an English and Lancashire Junior Championship event. There will be plenty of competition and last year, the prizes were Easter eggs, so it’ll be well worth a visit again!

Welcome to the fell running section. If you have an aversion to tarmac and the prospect of scrambling up steep-sided hills and careering down the other side on paths mainly populated by nimble-footed sheep, come rain, shine or snow sounds like fun, then fell running is for you. Holmfirth Harriers has a long and glorious history of running on the fells. Recent individual achievements include three consecutive wins in the Old County Tops for Tom Brunt and a silver medal in the Yorkshire championships for Helen Berry. On the team front we have had a series of solid performances in the FRA relays and the Ian Hodgson. In the 2009 Calderdale Way Relay the women were 4th and the men equalled their best ever performance with a magnificent 3rd place.
