100 Years: 1907 - 2007

Its our birthday! We will be 100 years old in October 2007. Come and celebrate with us. We have created a programme of lots of different kinds of events and activities to celebrate. We want to share the occasion with as many as possible - members, families, friends, colleagues and runners from past and present, from our own club and from other clubs who know us. Some, perhaps all, of them will be of interest and something you can share with us. Read on:

Please get in touch with us (see below) if you require any information about any of the planned events here in this section.

Centenary Run
9.30am 7th Oct 2007

On Sunday 7th October, 2007, Holmfirth Harriers recreated the club’s very first training run that took place almost 100 years to the day.

The Harriers’ attendance book lists 10 people as having taken part in that inaugural run on 5 th October 1907. Those present included the newly-appointed Club Captain John Turton and Vice Captain Herbert Earnshaw.

One hundred years on, over 200 members and friends of Holmfirth Harriers turned out to re-trace the footsteps of their predecessors. The sunny weather no doubt helped boost the turnout!

Two routes were available – the original route and a shorter version. Most (if not all) runners also entered into the spirit of the occasion and wore distinctive black T-shirts with a white ‘H’ on the front. These had been designed to recreate the original Holmfirth Harriers running kit.

ROUTE FOR CENTENARY RUN
SUNDAY 7 TH, OCTOBER, 2007

The route differs slightly to that originally taken as there is now no public access across the old Bradshaw Road to the Wolfstone Heights field route and for road safety reasons through Netherthong village.

Start Elephant and Castle Inn to Woodhead Road, left by Toll House bookshop, right up Greenfield Road on right hand pavement, past Parkhead Lane and Ashgrove Road to end of pavement at last house, no 172.

Cross (with great care please) Greenfield Road and continue on left hand pavement past bus turning circle to sign for Booth House Gallery, at junction with Black Sike Lane and Newlands Lane.

Cross (with great care please) Greenfield Road and continue up Newlands Lane to 40m from brow of hill then turn left over unsigned stile and immediately half left over series of stiles to another lane.

Turn right, then right again down Dean Road to Wickens Lane (Upperthong). Turn left and then right after 50m down Back Lane for 350m to 2 nd left footpath sign along Holme Valley Circular Walk route to Netherthong village.

In Netherthong turn right down Towngate for 70m, then right down Broomy Lea Lane marked “footpath” and straight on down gap (as lane bears right) – down to the Oval in Netherfields Estate. Go down Netherfield Drive (follow as Tinker Cup course), left up Bridge Lane, then right over 1 st stile down to metal gate. At gate turn right (away from Tinker Cup course) past next gate to your left to stile in corner of field, down steps, down path, right onto lane leading down to main Huddersfield Road.

Turn right and continue on right hand pavement along to crossing at Victoria Street traffic lights in centre of Holmfirth. Cross at traffic lights (pelican) crossing, continue down main street and cross Victoria Street at next zebra crossing onto Hollowgate and back to Elephant and Castle.
